How to Install a Spare Tire Cover

Installing a spare tire cover is a quick process, but if you have ordered one of our light-colored covers (like White, Khaki, or Camel), there is a crucial extra step. Tires emit gases and dyes that can permanently stain light-colored vinyl from the inside out.

To prevent this, our light-colored SpareCover® kits include a special Nylon Vapor Liner. Here is the step-by-step guide to installing your cover correctly for years of flawless use.

What’s Included in Your Kit

Before you begin, make sure you have everything from your package:

  • 1 - Nylon Liner (Vapor Barrier)

  • 1 - Light-Colored Vinyl Tire Cover

  • 1 - Rubber Grommet (Retainer for models with a rearview camera)

Note: You will also need a tiny drop of liquid hand soap or laundry soap for the final step.

Step 1: Prep the Cover and the Tire

First, wipe away any heavy dirt or mud from your spare tire. Then, take both your nylon liner and your vinyl tire cover and make sure they are pulled "Right-Side-Out."

(Pro-Tip: Vinyl becomes much softer and more flexible in warm temperatures. If it is cold outside, let the cover sit in the sun or indoors for 10 minutes before installing.)

Step 2: Install the Nylon Vapor Liner

This is the most important step for light-colored covers. The liner acts as a barrier, preventing tire dye from bleeding into your fresh white, khaki, or camel vinyl.

  • Wrap the liner around the spare tire.

  • Ensure it is smooth all the way around the tread and face.

  • Hook the clasp together at the back to secure it in place.

Step 2: Stretch the Cover Opening Slightly

Hold the cover by the elastic opening with both hands.

Gently stretch it outward — not to widen it, but to create enough flexibility for a smooth fit.

High-quality marine-grade vinyl naturally becomes more flexible when handled for a few seconds.

Step 3: Install the Vinyl Tire Cover

With the liner secure, it's time to put on the main cover.

  • Start by placing the top of the tire cover over the tire, then hooking the elastic over the upper edge.

  • Work your way down, pulling the cover along the left and right sides of the tire.

  • Once you reach the bottom, pull the bottom edge down and stretch the elastic under the bottom of the tire. Smooth out any wrinkles and center your design.

Step 4: Install the Camera Grommet (For Backup Cameras)

If your vehicle (like the 6th Gen Ford Bronco) has a backup camera protruding through the center of the spare tire, do not try to stretch the vinyl into the groove of the grommet.

  • Take your included Rubber Grommet.

  • Lubricate the inside of the grommet with a little bit of liquid hand soap or laundry soap.

  • Stretch the grommet directly over the camera stalk and push it back flush against the tire cover until the camera has a clear view. Need a replacement grommet? You can grab a spare Bronco Rear View Camera Retainer right here.
